Location Based Smart Folders in 10.5
Find yourself longing for the ability to search multiple locations using Leopard, like you could with Tiger? Here’s a quick fix to get you up and running again.
In Tiger I used smart folders a lot to cut my routine search time in half. For example I could set up a smart folder to only show me audio files that were created today in my masters folder and on my archives drive but omitting my audio record drive. That way at the end of the day I just click the folder, convert the files in batch and upload them.
Unfortunately, in Leopard Apple dumbed down the smart folder by removing the ability to specify more than one search location. Why, Apple?? Why? After a quick search I found a post on macosxhints.com with a solution and it’s very simple.
1. Create a search in the finder by clicking Command+F and add your filters.

2. Click Save and give it a name.

3. Browse to your user folder and then Library and open Saved Searches.
4. At this point you can control click or right click on the folder and choose OPEN WITH OTHER… and choose TextEdit or you can use Smultron as suggested by user Aikinai.
5. Look for your search location which looks like this:
6. Just Copy the line and paste it below the current string, changing the value to any additional folders or volumes you’d like to search.
7.. Save the file and now you’re truly searching smart.
