The Basics: Trashing Your Preferences

This was a post on my previous blog, reposted here by request.

We all encounter problems in Pro-Tools; some worse than others. If you run into one and can’t trace it back to a particular session you may want to try trashing your preferences. This is a common practice and usually one of the first steps when troubleshooting a problem. Here’s how to do it:

Note that you will have to reset any preferences that differ from the system defaults - such as auto-backup interval, timeline follows insertion, transport or classic mode, etc.

Mac OS X

1. Make sure Pro-Tools is closed.

2. Open your Macintosh HD and go to Users > yourusername > Library > Preferences

3. Delete the following files: Dae Prefs (the entire folder), Digisetup.osx, Pro Tools v7.3.1 Preferences (this file name may differ depending on what version you’re using).

Empty the trash and reboot your system.

Windows XP

Before you start make sure you are able to see hidden folders (Tools -> Folder Options > View | select “show hidden files and folders.” Also make sure Pro-Tools is not running.

  1. Go to: My Computer > C: > Documents and Settings > (your user name) > Application Data > Digidesign. Delete the file called “ProTools v7.3.1 Preferences.PTP” (this file name may differ depending on what version you’re using).
  2. Go to: My Computer > C: > Program Files > Common Files > Digidesign > DAE and then delete the entire “DAE Prefs” folder.
  3. Empty the Recycle Bin.

Windows Vista:

  1. Go to: My Computer > C: > Users > (your user name) > AppData > Roaming > Digidesign. Delete the file called “ProTools v7.3.1 Preferences.PTP” (this file name may differ depending on what version you’re using).
  2. Go to: My Computer > C: > Program Files > Common Files > Digidesign > DAE. Delete the “DAE Prefs” folder.
  3. Empty the Recycle Bin.
