TIP-Create Shouts Quickly (video)

I had a request to post a tip on creating shouts so here it is. This video uses ProTools 8 but everything applies to previous versions as well (except the expanded playlist feature). If you have any tricks to add or have questions please comment below.

I don’t understand any of this.

You have a nice voice. Have you ever considered doing voice over work? Oh, wait… lol.

My favorite line: “I have an un-intended effect going on here.”

There is also an email subscription option (on this page in the right column of the main blog page) where all new posts will be sent to your inbox. If nothing is added you won’t get an email… simple and you can unsubscribe at any time. Thanks for reading.

Can I “expand alternates to new playlist” in older versions of PT? Or just 8?

Luiz

Hi there, my question has nothing to do with the video above, great tutorial by the way, i have PT 8, i use a few USB cards for storing mp3s and i’ve noticed a folder named ” DigidesignDatabase” and within another folder named “Unicode”, every time i delete it, it comes back as soon as i insert my USB card.
anyone have any clues?
Thanks
Luiz

Hi Luiz,

The Digidesign Databases folder is created automatically on every volume by Pro Tools. It’s an index of all the files on that drive so the Workspace in Pro Tools can access them quicker (digidesign’s own internal version of spotlight, basically). It’s best to leave the folder there since it speeds up the search time for that drive and Pro Tools will continue to create it again and again after you remove it.

On a troubleshooting note, it’s sometimes helpful to remove these folders when errors occur, this forces Pro Tools to rebuild the database. To do this for you, here is a cool OS X utility from Jean-Charles Deshaies called Pro Tools Prefs and Database Helper.

Nick, thanks a lot bro, you’ve helped me a lot, i have another question if you don’t mind, i’m working on a megamix and all the songs used are transfered from old vinyl records and most of the have pops and clicks, would you know any tricks for removing them?
Thanks,
Luiz

Hi Luiz, no problem - any time. Regarding vinyl restoration - I have become fond of the Sonnox Oxford tools and they make a restoration bundle. From what I understand it does a great job and outshines many other popular tools. I’m not sure what the price is but they generally don’t come too cheap.
Another alternative is the Waves Restoration Bundle. I have not used it but they have been around a long time and most likely perfected their tools over the years. My major beef with the Waves stuff is its high price.

For anything you end up using, see if a demo exists and try it out. You may find an inexpensive plug-in from a smaller manufacturer works perfect for your needs. If you find something be sure to post here and let us know!
